Description

Formerly before the big earthquake  in 1706, the new Barocco's feeling had entered in churches and palaces of Sulmona. The 18th century's recontruction promoted the full diffusion. Follow the evolution of Barocco's style from mannerism trend, to the first Barocco's works, to arrive to the gorgerous 18th century's model.

1) Complesso della Santissima Annunziata


1) Complesso della Santissima Annunziata
SS. Annunziata's Church form one of the most important statement of architectural production on Barocco's period in Abruzzo. Inside the church, near the simple and elegant 18th century's plasters with pastel colors, you can see the magnificent 17th century's trunk of Cappella della Vergine, with its chromatic contrast of marble and its relative ornament.

Go through Corso Ovidio to the south way, turn on the right on Via Panfilo Mazzara, where you can see the majestic Church (convent) of S. Fancesco Della Scarpa.

Walking back on Corso Ovidio and go ahead to Fontana del Vecchio, turn on the left in Vico del Vecchio, where Palazzo Corvi offers to the visitors some different styles from the Barocco's mannerism at the end of 16th century, to the Barocco's second half of 18th century.

From Palazzo Corvi, turning on the left in Vico Dell'Arco, you arrive in Via Roma and, on the right, you can see the church of S. Caterina d'Alessandria with its extended lantern that hide inside the elliptical cupola that was frescoed in 18th century by the popular painter Giambattista Gamba.

From Via Angeloni, descending across Via Marselli, in front of the visitor, there's erect Palazzo Anelli - La Rocca, with its three gates and imponing windows made with rocks on the top deck.

On the right of Palazzo Anelli - La Rocca, near the Aqueduct, you can see the complex of S. Chiara.

From Piazza Garibaldi, walking back to Corso Ovidio, continue to the south to the street number 43 of Palazzo Grilli - De Capite, precious statement of the high artistic and technical level, reached thanks local workers with the rock's manufacturing during the Barocco's style.
